TELEFÓNICA USES BLOCKCHAIN FOR THE TRACKING OF SUPPLY IN THE SPANISH AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR

During the Mobile World Congress, the Spanish company Telefónica presented the results of its innovation project in the automotive sector, in which they have implemented the supply tracking and process automation through a blockchain chain in the Car manufacturing operations SEAT.

In the most important Congress for the car industry, which took place in Barcelona during this week, Vicente Muñoz, Director of Internet of Things (IoT) of Telefónica, explained to the attendees some of the results obtained in the adoption of a chain of Supplies supported by blockchain, which so far is responsible for recording and tracing the parts that make up the cars of the Seat plant.

Muñoz explained that at the moment the tests with blockchain, announced in November, are made in conjunction with the plant of Mirrors Ficoa, located in Soria, and the plant of Seat in Barcelona. The process for which IoT devices are included, such as sensors on trucks that detect critical variations and QR codes. Data that is logged and processed from a blockchain string.

Telefónica, who declares embracing the industry 4.0 by the hand of blockchain and IoT, recognizes the benefits of adopting the blockchain technology in the automotive area. Above all, taking into account the immutability, efficiency and transparency characteristic of distributed accounting to track the whole process of assembly of the car, from the provision of parts from suppliers to the final sale of the same.

It is important to note that the supply tracking for the automotive industry is one of the most frequent blockchain adoption cases in the sector. However, tracking auto parts is not the only purpose for which distributed accounting can be used.

In fact, Volkswagen recently allied with the IOTA Foundation to create smart cars. And Tesla Motors has been testing the operation of the block chain to pay tolls automatically in self-contained cars.

However, Telefónica, who has been approaching the blockchain ecosystem for over a year, claims to take into account the additional capabilities of blockchain aligned to the automotive sector. They recognize the possibility of recording in real time events in the blockchain; As well as managing information and documentation from smart contracts
